Practice hard as much as possible, have a good exercise program, and do your homework.
Practice is your key thing in this situation, but also remember to take care of yourself and create a day or two to rest.. I would just practice until you have had enough. Doesnt matter how many swings.. Find a person that is willing to help coach you or watch your form. They will show you where your weakest points are, and go from there. good luck!

Get the book What Color is Your Parachute. That's a weird title, I know, but it helps you figure out what direction is right for you. You can probably find it at the library or Amazon.com.

Read "Pure Baseball" by Keith Hernandez.
It is not an easy read but you will learn about running counts, what pitches pitchers will throw in given situations, defensive positioning, etc.
The book is 15 years old but the strategic aspects of the game still apply. Don't let that be a turn off if you can't relate to the players at that time.

Make them run…Every earned run they give up after say 5 runs should be a lap of poles…Make it a "Fun Run"…It will definitely piss them off, yet teach them two things: Do not throw the ball to first when the runner is already there and get the ball quickly in the infield…The will be pissed and get quicker in a hurry!
It's good that he's learning the game early.
The qualities that a leadoff batter needs to have, first and foremost, is the ability to get on base. If your son does a good job getting on base, that's why he's been put in the leadoff spot in the batting order.
The most important indicator of whether a team will score in a particular inning is not "who's coming up to bat this inning?", it's "will the lead off guy get on base". When the leadoff man doesn't reach base, the odds of scoring during that inning are reduced greatly.
If you're talking about becoming a major league baseball player, that's something that you have to take one step at a time. He will need to dominate each league he plays in along the way… the major leagues are only looking for the best of the best of the best…
Perhaps you should look into some good baseball camps for him, let some experienced coaches and scouts evaluate his talent. Keep in mind that he is only 8, and what happens over the next 6 or 7 years will be crucial in his development.
He's going to have to continue to love the game…. and you never know about this… even though he loves it now, he may develop other interests as he gets older. So be preapred for that as well.
If you have a good high school team nearby, contact the coach there and ask his advice on how to get your son into the best situation. Eight years old is too early to really tell anything, but it's not to early to think about what he needs to do if he intends to take a shot at it.
As far as not being "big", boys have different growth spurts at different ages, no two are exaclty alike… don't worry about that at this time, he's only eight.
And frankly, it's good that he likes to catch… catching is the most difficult position to play once you get to high school and beyond… you might notice that major league teams have a backup catcher, and you really never see players from other positions getting behind the plate, although some catchers will also play first basr or outfield in order to give them a "day off" (catching is the most demanding defensive position in terms of the toll it takes on a body, so playing first base or outfield is like a day off to most catchers, and this way they can still keep their bat in the lineup if they're good hitters).
But at the major league level, there are almost no position players who can adequately substitute defensively for a catcher. Catching requires a completely different set of skills.
You have to be very careful with his arm… the bones of the arm are not fully formed and fused at that age, and too many players destroy their arms trying to throw trick pitches. Even though throwing those kind of pitches is fun, it should probably be avoided at this point in time.
Just tell him to keep playing, having fun and while he's doing that, contact some coaches to see what the best way would be to bring out the best in him. Keep in mind that there are a lot of good 8 year old baserball players out there, only thing is, they're spread out all over the country (not to mention other countries).

You may have 2 issues to deal with, neither may be of your control.
One, you need to find out if your age is a factor. While you may be eligible by grade, your state high school regulations may have a rule on how old you can be to play. Check with your athletic department.
Two, and most important, is health. There will be a lot of running and physical excursion during spring training and practice. Some of us big guys are healthy enough to sustain the workout, other aren't. I spent 30 years on borrowed time, not knowing my heart was defective. I could have dropped dead on the playing field at any time! Thank God, I didn't.
If you get the go-ahead on both fronts, go for it!
